What is the key difference between a tantrum and meltdown? Mainly, tantrums are related when the child lacks the proper language to express frustration and is often frequent in younger children. As kids continue to develop the proper words to express themselves, tantrums will lessen. However, a meltdown is a feeling of complete overwhelm. For some kids, it is when their sensory system is overloaded. It can trigger the “flight or fight” reactionary in the brain causing kids to shutdown.
